Guys,
While browsing through google after a search, I came across this
http://www.irishastronomy.org/user_resources/viewFiles.php?folder_id=1

This looks like the fabled lost gallery section, is it supposed to be there ?

It is for now. Rather than deleting it immediately I wanted to leave the files there for a while because the images in there are still linked around the board. I will be deleting it soon though (as soon as bandwidth crosses 40GB per month).

I thought you were going to re-build the gallery section using more secure software ?

I am.

But the old files section isn't going to be compatible with it.

When you say deleting the old files, will you be transferring the older images over to the new gallery before hand or will they all be lost ?

I mean they'll probably be lost. At this stage all the stuff in there is getting old anyway.

It might be worth putting up a post stating that these are going to be deleted, say a few weeks before you do so, if someone out there has images in there and maybe deleted them off their computer, they might want them.
I have a few images in there where I'll need to make sure I have them here also.

Playing the advocate here Bart, but with the new move imminent, won't we have the space to hold onto those old files? There will be 4 years of memories in there come May! ;)

The problem is not space, it's the security problems with the old system.

Ah, right. That would be a problem. Actually, I'd like to know further what you mean. Could it not be as simple as moving the images to an 'images' folder for that old content? Then, when broken links are found as we go on, the Mods can fix the links? If any are curently being used, they will be quickly rectified to have the link redirected to that images folder.

The old system is database driven, all the metadata would be lost and we would be left with a load of files that no one knows anything about, like who they belong to or anything. It's a great big mess. Far better to make a clean break and get it right.

Oh ... and the security problems come from the fact that the old systems relied on php having write access to disk. This is many shades of a bad idea. In more innocent times it was the norm, but we don't live in more innocent times anymore.

Also, there is no protection from direct linking on the old system and that is costing us a fortune in bandwidth.

I think they might be worth keeping. Perhaps have someone sort though them into basic categories (deepsky/plaenatery/weather...) and use something like jalbum to create a permanent read only old archive of this stuff.

Hi guys,

I don't have anything in the old gallery since I just joined the board, but I too think it is a shame if four years of memory/pictures just disappears. So I have an idea.

If the gallery is database driven, I presume that each entry (row) contains a file name of the picture plus all the meta info, correct? Then it should be possible to create a small script, in PHP or Perl or whatever, that goes through the database and creates a text file for each image file. The text file can then hold all the meta data in a clever format, e.g. XML or CSV, and the files will then be paired and identified by unique filenames. Then we can create a new gallery based on these picture/data file pairs.

The unique filenames can be achieved either by renaming all the files adding a counter (file id) or if a primary key is in use in the database then that can be included in the filename. If we change the filename of the picture we need of course to reflect that in the meta data text file.

Another way is to just "dump" (backup) the database. Is it MySQL? Then mysqldump() will do the trick.

My PHP skills are a bit rusty, but I'd like to offer my assistance. If I can get access to the database from remote I can try a few things. If not then I need to get a description of the table structure.

The files already have unique names so that much has been taken care of. If you PM me your email address I'll send you the mysqldump of the relevant tables.

Cheers,

Bart.

Yeah, I say let the meta data be lost! We can re-organise the files etc as we go along I think. Another team (not just an individual) would help that greatly.

Hi Bart,

I sent you a PM with my email address, but the PM is still in my Outbox -- not in my sent box. I suppose that means that you didn't receive it yet?! What can I do?

If you can zip all the images up someplace and point me at them I'll have a look at categorising them.

Sorry ... still working on the export. I don't want to give you the users table because that has private data in it but that table is linked to the old files section .... as soon as I figure out the best way to give you what you need I'll stick it in an email.

No problem. Take your time.

What you could give right away is just the table structure of the table holding images and the meta data. Just a simple SQL 'describe <tableName>' would do it.

Do you have shell access to the database or do you use phpmyadmin?
