new section on site. was created by ftodonoghue
Hi Folks

I have mentioned this before about using the IFAS site to store and swop presentations for our club talks.

This never really got off the ground, so how about we have a section / page where members can simply list their talks and if anyone is interested in getting their hands on a talk they simply email the owner to request the talk.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Trevor

Hi Trevor,

Good to see you down at Birr. Many thanks for the Hubble DVDs and I've passed them on to Deirdre plus mentioned to Michael Murphy that I have a copy for him.

That is a great idea about swapping talks, etc. Because of picture copyright we would just have to maybe indicate in the text of the presentations where people can get the images. I'd be reluctant to upload a full Ms-Powerpoint show on the web that might have copyrighted pictures embedded.

not so much of a problem if only a low res/flash presentation is uploaded

eg. the light pollution talk I gave to SDAS last year is at www.ilpac.eu/content/view/29/25/

Hi Guys

john, i was thinking of just uploading a list of talks and if someone wants one they can get the owner to email it so there are no talks hosted online.

Maybe I should go ahead and collect a list of talks.

Al thanks for the link to that. Will definitely use it down in Kerry.

Cheers

I'm not sure about uploading Powerpoint talks, Most of mine are literally hundred of megabytes in size due to the massive image content.

If we used an updated speaker list, why not just ask people from that list to come down to yourselves in Kerry. We find that a speaker from another club is alot more interesting then seeing the same auld lads up in front of the club each month. :)

I'd concur with that.

I recollect that we did this last year or the year before... Don;t know here the list ended up but I think it was a case of club reps emailing someone in IFAS for the list of speakers and their talks...

Hi folks just to clarify

1. i propose a LIST of ppt presentations that people would have no problem sharing. eg albert presentation on light pollution.

2. the presentations would still be stored on owners pc's.

3. it was me that tried to do this before and it didn;t work. no harm trying again

4. Being down in kerry doesn't help when most of the speakers are in dublin. it will mean someone taking two days off work

Cheers

We understand what you're saying re the list Trevor.
What perhaps wasn't fully appreciated by us here was where this idea developed from - i.e. the difficulty in getting speakers down to Kerry mid-week.

It is hard to get speakers to kerry, but that is only a tiny part of my motivation. We had a talk by a local club member last night on comets and it was great, but he must have spent a MASSIVE amount of time and effort researching it and putting it together.

i just think that there must be a huge amount of material already researched and in ready to present formats that we as astronomy clubs can share with each other and take some of the load off.

Having given a few talks myself I can testify to the fact that the preparation takes very much longer than the delivery. Whilst the idea of sharing presentations is ostensibly a good one in theory, there are practicalities to be considered.

Firstly, a PowerPoint is far from being all of a talk. One of the biggest challenges I was ever given in my professional life was being handed someone elses PowerPoint and being told to deliver the key points to the BoM at an hour's notice! I did OK, and even coped with some of the ensuing questions, but in the amateur astronomy community folk really do ask hard questions and it's there that the presenter's depth of knowledge is key.

Secondly, when I write a PowerPoint, it contains only the bits I want to show on screen. The rest is in my head.

On the matter of copyright, I either (mostly) use my own images, or if not then I use public domain images, or those from one whose permisssion I have sought and won, and in the latter two cases give credit to the copyright owner(s).

Just my thoughts. I'd be happy to join in such a scheme BTW.

Trevor,
Have you considered using Skype for your lectures?

This is why I don't see this idea working. I could give out all my power points and they would be useless to anyone else.

Now that's an interesting idea. You send down the slides in advance, they are projected for the audience and the speaker speaks over skype. That really could work. It just means you'd need broadband in your venue.

Exactly.
As the lads hold their meetings in the IT in Tralee, I presume they can get a decent internet connection. This could open up whole new possibilities in terms of speakers, national and international.

Great idea.
Do any speakers have recordings of their presentations, on audio or MP3?
These could be used in conjunction with the Powerpoints to present lectures, either directly in that format or in assisting a speaker to essentially deliver their lecture for them after some preparation.
We'd certainly be interested in getting speakers up, and we've welcomed several in the recent past.
It's a long way up North, but you'll get a welcome for sure.

If anyone doesn't, it could be quite easy folks. As most of us are into laptops and Powerpoint-type programmes, every laptop has a microphone. Also, there are some free programmes out there (the best of course will be shareware and have limited options until paid for) that will record your desktop, like a movie.

Something to think about on an individual basis?
