Roy, Well done for pushing this on.

I'm based in Dublin, but down in the Glen (Core of the Reserve) quite a bit so I know the area. I'm not sure yet if I will be down for this weekend but I hope to be.

A couple of people have asked about viewing locations in the area, and rest assured, there are lots of them (flat open areas, with reasonably close "facilities").

I hope to see you there.

Noel.

hi Roy,

Hope you had a good weekend.

Jouke de Ruiter lives on the Beara Peninsula and often comes to the star parties (Cosmos/Galway/etc). I'll let you know if I manage to contact Jouke.

TO ALL THAT ARE ATTENDING

I was speaking with Stevie from NIAAS and he said
that 5 of them have already booked there rooms in
Skellig Lodge, That's great news guys. :) :)

I have sent an email to Frida from Skellig Lodge
letting her know that we will need accommodation
for about 16 more people, So she is going to get
back to me with all the available rooms that she will have
for that weekend.. Personally I don't mind what type of room
I get as long as I have a bed to rest my head during the day
for a few hours be fore a good all nighter.

Cheers Roy

Good news Paul! I've just booked a bed in the mixed dorm too ;)

Got that PM from you Roy and no problem to do a workshop/talk ... maybe something on observing the sky with the unaided eye (e.g., learning to really see the sky). My home e-mail is in my signature below if you want to drop me a line.

I was thinking that people might like to trek over to Valentia and visit the Skelligs interpretive centre (I was impressed by it when last there a few years ago). Also, we could have a look at the Tetrapod fossilized footprints on the far side of the island. If the weather is good we might get a trip to the Skelligs themselves.

I think that's a great idea for early Saturday
as for the Tetrapod footprints I know that they're
still closed off to the public after the big storm in Feb
but I also know that you can see them with a good set
of binos that I'm sure alot of us would have..

If you are looking at a trip over to Velentia, it would be worth stopping in the Glen (also in the core of the reserve) to scout another good location (the beach in the Glen is a great location for observing from (sheltered from the road), with plenty of parking and camping space and a couple of B&B's in the area for accommodation as well). Also consider a stop at the Chocolate Factory (also in the Glen) for a coffee or hot chocolate - a favour stop of mine after a swim (incidently, they are also mentioned on the Kerry Dark Sky site, so they might even facilitate a future event - good parking, with a view of the southern horizon, but close to the road so car headlights would be a problem.

Thanks Roy/Noel for that information about the area ... I hadn't realised the Tetrapod footprints were closed off due to February's storm. We never really saw the full effect up in Dublin but my brother working in Shannon said they were all ordered stay indoors and away from windows that day by the company's safety officers.

Cheers Noel for that extra info about the Glen and what to visit. Chocolate constellations, now there's a Dark Sky marketing idea ... remember folks, you read it here first ;)

Hi all..

I just received a PM from Michael Murphy letting me know
that when he tried booking a room online that it came up
that they were fully booked.. This is because they have pre-booked
most rooms for us attending" Ballinskellig Astrocamp 2014"(Guess we'll go with this name).

For those of you still to book a room I recommend that you call them up and
tell them it's for this event.. I know they a few dorms and single rooms left.

Also i got an email from Frida saying that can use the living room on Saturday
to give our talks and workshops, so anybody out there that can get their hands
on a projector for the talks it would be really appreciated.

Cheers Roy

hi Roy,

If Frida (or anyone) has a large flat-screen monitor/TV we can probably hook the laptops up to that for the presentations instead of an actual digital projector. For the size of the group that would probably suffice?

Talk soon,
