Anybody See Comet NEAT Yet? was created by Keith g

NEAT is coming quicky, anybody see it yet?, I've already got reports that it's visible from the states at about 40 degrees latitude, at about 3rd magnitude. It's very low still for us now in the SW-West, I'm going to try to see it tonight. It's to the left Sirius, a bit lower down.

Clouds as usual here in galway, a large veil of high Cirrus cloud prevented us seeing Comet NEAT, Anybody fair better further East, im sure D.M is making the best of the clear skies at the "biggest astronomical event in the country" ya right!
Just curious has anyone spotted the debatable ashen light on Venus, was looking at it tonight, thought i could see it but probably a trick of the eye.

ronan,
he probably is as it is clear here in dublin. the only thing it shows though is that there is interest and even people willing to pay for what all clubs do for free. we are just going to have to make bigger noises and show people there are alternatives.

Tried for NEAT tonight but a low band of cloud hugged the horizon and blocked any chances. More confidence for the next few nights if it just remains clear. Lovely view of crescent Venus, but no sign of ashen light.

Hi,
Had a look also, but no sign yet,
Venus was looking nice though, you could almost imagine the rest of the darkened globe, nice illusion.
Accoreding to the Sky at Night (one just an hour ago), this comet should be more easily visible as the month goes on.

Hi, just after observing Comet Neat, took some difficuly locating it, checked several comet charts and they all seemed to be incorrect, although I think they are primarly for American observers. But saw it first at 10.45 (my time!) very low down, i’d say 2 degrees above the horizon, like a fuzzy blob similar to Linear WM1, slight hint of a tail and was very close to a 3 mag star.

Lovely clear night

2 degrees above horizon !!!, no way am I going to see it here, better head up Cratleo hill on the next clear evening to get some elevation.
According the the weather forecast, this week is going to be good, worth trying then.

Yes, I'm thinking of taking a trip up to Cloon wood in Wicklow tomorrow night (or perhaps even tonight), if conditions are good. According to the data in my copy of Starry Night Backyard, NEAT will move northwards by up to 4 degrees per night during the course of the week, so the prospects for seeing it should improve considerably during the week. With the reasonably fine weather forecast, the waning moon and the comet still relatively close to the sun, this week seems to be the week to try and catch it, so have your scopes/binoculars at the ready! :)

I didnt have any success seeing it the other night, ****ing light pollution in Dublin (cf www.irishastronomy.org/user_resources/fi...3-vt-photo-01-aw.jpg)

Forecast is for less cloud tomorrow so I'll try again.

Managed to see NEAT through my binoculars on Wednesday night through a lucky gap in the clouds. It was late twilight, so no sighting of a tail and cloud moved in quickly preventing further viewing. Looked impressive though, quite large and bright. If the weather forecast is good for this weekend then I'd be hoping to try for some naked eye viewing as well as seeing the tail.

Not today it seems Al! dark grey clouds all over where I am (Tyrrellspass), and looks like the possibility of thunder (I hope - if it HAS to rain! I love lightning! ).

I tried looking for NEAT last night after 10pm, it was quite clear, some wispy high-altitude cloud, but no joy. Although, I was a useless astronomer last night, because I only had a general idea of where to look for it! This comet seems to be a tricky one to interperet.... its a comet, but you HAVE to know where to look for it, as a fuzzy star, because it has no discernable tail... is this correct??? :?

Almost 11pm and been viewing comet Neat, easy to find with Bonoculars and 8" Dob located aprox 1/2 way between Saturn and Venus
No doubt many will have viewed this comet for the first time in Ireland tonight, others who might have seen it before now were blessed with clear skies.
Here is a nice link for forecasting if night in Ireland is going to be clear

YES! YES! YES!.....FINALLY, CLEAR SKIES! :D :D :D :D

Have just come in from happy 'cos I've finally had a chance to see NEAT!
Beautiful view with M44 in the same field of vision in my binos.
If you haven't seen it yet, get your kit and go take a peep!
Very surprised how easily a novice like me found it........ but I did!

P.S. I think Charles meant half way between Jupiter and Saturn.

From my vantage point anyway, the comet was just on the verge of naked eye visability, just a faint smudge. Wouldn't say I could see the tail.... however.... there are street lights nearby. From a darker location, the tail might be visible.

I must confess to being quite disappointed in Comet NEAT. It has been far from a 'great' comet. I remember looking at Hale-Bopp from off Baggot Street through the lights of Dublin city centre and still being able to see the tails clearly and distinctly. So far I have only been able to detect NEAT with binoculars. It did look good earlier so close to the Beehive, but stillnot what I have been looking forward to.

Saw NEAT last night.
Very close to the Beehive and much brighter.
Had a faint tail about 1 deg long.
Tried to find it with the naked eye - I'm 80% sure I saw it but it was very difficult. I'd be very surprised if anyone could see the tail with the maked eye.
I looked at it with both my binos and 4.5" reflector. Both gave a very nice view of it, but, as Shane pointed out, it's certainly no Hale-Bopp.

Hi,

I saw NEAT last night too, near the Beehive at around 23:35hrs last night. Where I live, I spotted it, I must say, quite easily, with the naked eye. No tail was visible until I got it in binoculars though ( -> Michael).
Also saw a BRILLIANT Iridium flare that lasted about 13 seconds (at 23:39hrs), which I believe is unusual mostly (for such a long duration). Heavens-above says it was 56, and was quite close to my location for maximum brightness.
I have to say, while I saw Jupiter splendidly in the binoculars (8-24 X 50's), I saw no Galilean moons. I think this is the first time I haven't seen them against such a clear bright disk. Either they were all hidden from direct view, or the slight atmospheric haze knocked them out of view.

I saw it tonight. A smudge with a bright centre. Slight if any tail, Lovely in my new Lidl binoculars. Easy to find above Beehive and my first comet since starting taking this hobby serious.

Have to agree about the reference to Hale-Bopp as I remember looking at that in awe in the centre of London tru some of the worst light polluted skies in Europe night after night.

Saw it tonight through lots of light pollution and a haze. Only occasionally saw Iota Cancri unaided. Though NEAT was easy in binoculars. Small unimpressive smudge.

Got lovely views of comet NEAT last night (Sunday 16/05/04) from Cloon wood. The nucleus was very bright, and we could make out a short but well fanned out tail. Gordon Nason was even able to observe the real-time motion of the comet through space :!: - the relative positions of the comet's nucleus and a nearby star were seen to have changed significantly over the course of the evening, giving a good idea of how quickly the comet is racing up into the northern sky.

albert,
exactly my impression of it. i tried from my backyard here in finglas and it too me half and hour to find it having never seen it before. most of the time though was for dark adaption and the lights in the houses going on and off did not help. this comet at the moment is definitely no hale bopp. the haze and the light pollution turn it into a faint smudge. couldn't see any stars in that area of the sky.

Did this comet brighten up suddenly when I wasnt watching?
