Looks like you may have brought some clear skies with you :)

Keep this up and you'll be a very popular forum member!

Some very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable people here.
(I'd be a friendly one rather than knowledgeable one)

Hello all from Strokestown, Co Roscommon.

Looking for help and advice. Been interested in astronomy since I was a kid and having bought a telescope a couple of years ago (Meade ETX-70AT) and having a few false starts/frustrating attempts at getting the thing to work last night I cracked it (sort of). Must admit I'm not really totally understanding all the functions and just sort of pointed and experimented (which was all well and good but defeating the purpose of the autostar thingumybob).

Anyway, if anyone can give me any advice/simple directions/a smack round the head it's be appreciated. Honestly, the simpler the better. :)

Welcome!

Loads of very experienced and helpful people here, you've come to the right place :)

As a relative noobie myself I'd be glad to impart the small bits of experience I have!

Just ask!

Not sure what the Meade is (eg... is it GoTo?).

But a first point of call should be stelarium .

It's my first port of call before a night out with the scope!

Clear skies!
Peter

Hi. Yeah it's one of those 'go to' ones. I've had a look and found a decent vid on YouTube which has cleared things a bit. I'm a bit more in tune as to what I should be doing anyway - so I'll have a go tonight (clouds permitting).

There's a great app I have on my iPhone that I've been messing with, it uses the GPS type feature and you just point it at the sky and it shows you exactly what you are seeing.

hello my name is dave,

after viewing this site for a while now i thought id say hi,
i am originally from dublin but moved to Donegal/ leitrim area about ten years ago. The area I live in is as rural as you can get and far away from any of the dreaded dublin light pollution.
My main interests up to now have been mostly armchair astronomy books and books on basic physics/ astrophysics, my practical viewing has mostly being done with binoculars .

my daughter of has recently got interested in the hobble and as such santa brought her a small 76mm telescope for xmass, but the daft bugger didn't do enough research first and the viewing is not great.

so now im hoping he might be able to save up and get us a better one.

after recently becoming unemployed after working for 10 years of night shifts, im finding alot more time for viewing.

we have being trying to find a club near us for a while now but to no avail, so if anybody can point us in the right place it would be appreciated,

Hi everyone my name is Brendan im from Athlone just starting out in astronomy with my old binoculars and a star chart. Ive always been interested in astronomy from a very young age and i had a hudge intrest in the now complete shuttle program i even traveled to florida for (atlantis) sts 117 launch and by coincidence i was there for the launch of kepler on the delta 2 B) unfortunately ive found any news articles and coverage from nasa to be a little informationless sort of stupified :S as such so my intrest in nasa these days is pretty poor, this has led me to dig a little deeper in my own intrests in how the universe works. I will be purchasing a telescope soon  so i would quite like to attend some observing nights and try`out some beginner scopes to get a handle on what exactly i want.

So anyway any heads ups for events will be appreciated.

Thanks loads, Brendan.

Hello

I'm new to this forum so I decided to say hello, So hello. :)

I'm from Northern Ireland and to be more specific Londonderry and i was just wondering whether there is any other keen astronomers in the surrounding area. I am aware there is the NIAAS whom meet close to belfast every week and some weekends for a meet up, however it is a great drive from me for the night, so I was wondering if there was anybody in the surrounding are whom would like to meet up some night. :D

I have been chatting with some people in the NIAAS forum and there is a good number of people whom would like to meet up and i have a couple of mates who are also keen in the hobbie :)

I have been looking for a telescope too, as you don't get much enjoyment with only your eyes :L :scope:
So i have been keeping my eyes out, if you have any telescopes, I will be happy to negotiate prices if its a good solid scope for someone who's new to this hobby.

Thanks
Jack Gibson

welcome Jack, from all us at Midlands Astronomy Club. Im sure the folks at NIAAS will be up for some observing sometime soon. Its a wonderful time of the year to turn binoculars or telescope to the sky- so don't delay, and don't rush into buying a telescope either, till you have a chat with club members :)

Joe - I wish you the best with that.

There are keen dobsonian users on the forum - and others with good expertise
so don't hold back if there are questions you need answering.

The Skywatcher 200mm Dob is fine scope. You'll probably be on the lookout before long for better eyepieces and maybe a moon-filter. When it comes to eyepiece choice there are definitely people here that can give advice.

You may also want to learn to how to collimate it to get the best out of it.

Clear Skies...

Hi All,
Just thought I would say hello, I have being browsing the forums for a while now and thought it was time to join in. I am from the Athy Area and recently purchased a second hand scope from adverts.ie (Celestron 9.25). I was wondering if there was anyone in the area who could make sure I was setting the scope up correctly so that I get maximum enjoyment from it.

Thanks
Brendan

Hi Brendan,
Welcome to our little home! I don't know anyone personally near Athy, but if you get no luck in that area, you could always try and make a trip to Tullamore for one of the Midlands Astronomy Club lectures. We get newbies all the time asking about setting up scopes they just got.

I will pm you so you can give me a call

BTW we meet first tuesday of every month in tullamore and weather permitting do some joint observing when we can on saturday nights - when the weather permits

Hi all,
my name is Amy
I've been interested in stargazing for a while now but never did anything about it until now,
i got my first telescope in Jan but haven't used it much at all (too much light pollution on my balcony)
i'm very new to all this and don't know where to start.
i live in Dublin and was wondering if there are regular spots where people go,
Parks are the only places i could think of but they're all locked up at night so any suggestions would be very welcome

thanks in advance :)
