Comrade Vaggeli,

I just sent email surrounding accomodations for myself. It would be nice if ALL of us here on IFAS try and coordinate our efforts.

Anthony, is the 36 hrs final?

Comrade Vaggeli,

Considering the lengthy travel to and from Russia, it aggraves the situation surrounding a lengthier stay.

What are people's plans surrounding the excursion for the eclipse? Seanie? John? Dave Grennan? Dave Lillis? Frank? Paul?

Artem,

I know that Russia has 220v for electric current. Is the plug with two or three prongs? Is it easy to find an adapter so that we can convert, if necessary, our laptop cord for power?

Yes, 220v.
We have 2-prongs plugs. So, you need Uk->Euro adapter - like this , right?
Yes, they sell it, in computer shops, for example. But if you have a possibility to buy it at home, better do it, 'cause it could take time finding a shop, where such apapter is.

Thanks Artem! My laptop is from the US (90-240v) and I already have such an adapter which I use right now for my laptop and the two prongs in Greece.

Антони,
It is a great day today. Well, 3 days is better than 1,5
We will have a great time!

Dear friends,
Another issue is the TAL telescope factory located in Novosibirsk www.telescopes.ru/product.html?cat=1. I have a TAL 2M (6inch reflector) and I know that TAL telescopes are high quality and very low priced. I am considering to buy a 4 or 5 inch TAL refractor.
There is a new one on the site, TAL-125 APO, but no info at all. Any news?

The TAL organizes tours and visits to the factory, rents telescopes and offers an observing spot at their eclipse camping site www.total-eclipse-2008.com/. Are you guys interested in that option?

The problem we were coming up against was information for Novosibrsk. With the new information site launched, maybe we will now be able to find out more. One of our staunch members (Terry Moseley) was trying to get in touch with a colleague through Scotland who has links in Novosibrsk. However, exchange of incormation was slow, and up until about 2 months ago, it was understood that there were maybe 2 or 3 hotels in the city, and that the other accommodation was university campus apartment sharing.

I for one do not know where we stand yet, or how interest amongst members here is fairing. I hope that something does happen, because I not only look forward to experiencing another eclipse, but also to learn another culture in the process.

Rumour has it that the Russian babes and fuzzy bears have also heard so much about Seanie that they are equally most eager to see the "legend" for themselves.

Anyway, does this mean you are coming?????? :D

Seanie,

It is a blessing in disguise that we are separated by a few thousand kilometers or, otherwise, we would turn things upside-down wherever we happened to be at the time.

Vagelis.

Vageli,

I sent them email approximately three weeks ago and NO reply so far. More specifically, I asked if it is possible for me to rent a german equatorial mount for mounting my Tak FSQ which I plan to bring with me ... and they seem to have ignored my inquiry.

The worst case scenario is that I would bring my AP Mach1GTO as well but, if possible, I would like to simply bring along the FSQ alone.

Anthony,

I think they produce 3 mounts:
- TAL MT 3S Heavy-duty stepper mount www.grootven.be/productdetails.asp?PID=905 and
- TAL GEM-2: This is the one I have, remember Kastellorizo?
- TAL GEM-3: The light version of GEM-2

Hope they answer soon.

- TAL MT 3S Heavy-duty stepper mount www.grootven.be/productdetails.asp?PID=905 and

I can live with this one for the two-hour duration of the eclipse.

Anyway, I seriously doubt if I will hear from them given the three weeks (at least) which have already passed since my message to them.

Anthony, this is fresh!
Another greek group, with Aris Mill-man, Martha, etc, will stay in Centralnaya Hotel. This is on the same street with ours, a little further away!

(I hope Aris's snoring at night has been reduced to an acceptable level, so we can have a descent sleep)

PJ, the difference between a partial and a Total Eclipse of the Sun
is like the difference between
a quick hand-kissing and a looooooong passionate night!

Nothing compares to THE CORONA.
And no photograph or video will ever be like the actual naked eye experience. In my first total eclipse in Kasterllorizo, 2006, I thought I was prepared for everything, I thought I was an experienced amateur astronomer, I thought I was ready to take great photos. Well, at the time of the event, I found myself cought by the unbearable lightness of being! It was impossible to concentrate on anything else but THE SUN. Time was passing in a strange way. Neither slow nor fast. It was just different.
I even forgot my name. I remember like in a dream, I was hearing a voice screaming "Filters, Vagelis, Filters" and after a whole minute passed, I thought: "Hm... Vagelis? That must be me!". I just hadn't taken off the filters from the camera lens for a whole minute.
Unique experience!

It's all a matter of priorities, Paul.
What's important for someone and what's not.
It's strange, but I 've heard people that can afford a set of 600 euro Naglers (each) saying they can't afford an eclipse trip, or they 're not interested in it.
