I got a registered post yesterday with my passport in it, they put a big sticker on one of the pages, its in Russian so it either says
"let this person into Russia"
or
"send this person to a Russian prison in the artic"

We got our visa-armed passports the other day at the gathering at Nikos Tremoulis's place.
Ours have an english translation, too.
They say:
"... blah, blah, blah,...
Foreigners with this visa are welcome in Russian Federation, unless they have HIV, malaria, blah, blah, bla, ... , or urchin spines in their body or have recently been bitten by malicious insects and their foot remained swollen for more than 3 days."
Welcome to Russia!

I'm going to assume you are genuine, everyone here already has accommodation sorted, thanks for asking.
BTW, nice pic of the Moon Vagelis.
I had visions of the visa been refused for one reason or another, I'm relieved it came through.

It's this day week!!!
How crazy is that!
Out local rag (the Limerick Leader) has asked us to
submit an article and photos when we get back.
These kind of events seem to stir the 'human interest' aspect
more so than any other.
Although my mate a work says to me today,
''so ye are goin' a half way round the world to just
watch the sun go dark yeah?,
Shur, I see that every night,
it's called the sunset!''
Um..
doh!
not the same...
ah well...
His loss.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the initial forecasts right now for eclipse day are calling for rains!

I see there is a plan to meet at the Lennin statue
on Wednesday but alas we will not be there.
I'd like to meet up with all the members of the
'Novosibirsk Guide' forum and also 'dfnsk' the webmaster.
When are the Greeks heading out?
Where will ye be staying.
We all need to exchange contacts
and to have a back up plan if we need to
drive to a 'clear spot'
(I see this is also the reason for meeting at the
statue)
I'm hoping that if ye Greek lads are there that day that
we could meet up with ye whe we get over to get the
update?
Cheers,

"have car, will travel !"
If there is a clear sky within 300 miles of Novo on the eclipse track, we will be there.

I will sit down over the weekend and see what kind of options exist with the train system they have in place. It should be a lot cheaper and especially much quicker.
Sidenote: I just left a message for Artem on the the board he set up surrounding the eclipse.

I wouldn't like to be at the mercy of the Russian train system or its timetable, there is a major road going south east from Novo to Mongolia, it almost follows the eclipse path, this is where we will probabily end up travelling on if the weather is good and if we think it'll be clear in that direction.
we're going this far, what another 50e for the car.
Then again, we might be worrying over nothing yet. !

Don't say that Anto! Even for us that can't make it, we still don't want to hear that!
Then again, I remember some members here telling me about their 1994 eclipse experience in Frankfurt. It was completely cloudy, rained up to the eclipse. The rain stopped, the cloud remained, but the change in temperature and light was dramatic for totality. I think it was sunny in the evening...

This is the problem with one-time events where there is no room for error and many things must go right ... starting with the weather.
Anyway, to use a Greek expression, hope dies last .... let's see how things materialize as we get into early next week.
Personally, I just want clear skies for a specific two minutes ... in fact, I would settle for even 30 seconds of clear skies during totality so that I can fire off my sequence of exposures for the extended corona photo I have in mind.

Weather forecast for Novosibirsk:
www.wunderground.com/global/stations/29634.html
weather.msn.com/tenday.aspx?wealocations=wc:RSXX0077
www.weather-forecast.com/locations/Novosibirsk/forecasts/latest
Weather forecast for Biysk - 320km south of Novosibirsk:
weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:4060&q=Biysk%2c+RUS
Biysk is right at the foothills of the ALtay Mountains, so there's not much point going further south than this. Next stop past the mountains would mean crossing into Mongolia.
Weather forecast for Barnaul - 200km south of Novosibirsk
weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=...009&q=Barnaul%2c+RUS
No major roads north of Novosibirsk along the eclipse path.
