Auto-subscribing to a thread was created by philiplardner
Quick suggestion for the FireBoard Forum - is there any chance you could change the settings (if others are happy with the idea) so that a person is automatically 'Subscribed' to a thread if they post to it or if they start a new topic? The website would then notify them of any replies or other activity on threads that they are obviously interested in following. Users can still unsubscribe from a topic as usual.
Thanks,
Phil.

I have turned on the "Post-subscription checked by default" for auto-subscribing, from now on the subscribe box on the post will be automatically ticked
The topic notification emails are planned for Kunena, see kunena.uservoice.com/pages/general/sugge...-to-forum-categories
We will upgrade Fireboard to Kunena once Kunena is stable for Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.6 has arrived with proper access control mechanisms as we need these for private boards.

it would be a bit strange to be auto recieving email notifications
to every post you read.
If ye are not going to change it back then
ye are going to have to have to change the bit at the bottom so.
(It's fine telling me or Dave or whomever might read this particular post
but for the new person, wont they just assume our boards are the
same as nearly every other board out there where you have to
check a box to receive email notifications on a particular thread?)
from 'Check this box to have yourself notified about replies to this topic.'
to
'Un Check this box to not receive email notifications whenever a new
reply is posted in this topic'

If my memory serves me correctly, more people wanted the auto subscribe on than wanted it off by default.

Would it not be more sensical to have it it unsubscribed by default, if you want mails then click the subscribe button. Maybe start a poll about it ?

Democracy right?
other than that,
If whomever is responsibe for the runnin of the boards
wants to make a call either way,
I'll go with that also...
Day got Da Power.
Other to other to that.
The usual on other boards,
is to check the box if you want notification of replies.
Again,
if the majority want it so be it.
although I would still think modifing
the line next to the box would be needed as otherwise
it'll look stuipid.

However, I can understand the function it serves and why some might like it.
Have those who like the subscribe feature tried the RSS feeds?
www.irishastronomy.org/forum?func=view&catid=9&id=76722
It might provide a suitable compromise.

People wanted a mail when a thread was started, not for every post made in a participating thread.

AFAIK, no mail is sent if a new thread is started (unless you are a moderator). You only get an email if you post to a thread. You continue to receive email for each new post to that thread.
Surely it would be equally sensical for those not wishing to subscribe to click on the "unsubscribe me" button...
A poll sound like a good suggestion unless we wait for the upgrade...

I suppose what I'm assuming here is that more people would prefer NOT to get the emails then those who do. This is were a poll would come in.

Bring it on!
To hell with a poll...
I think I can safely say that we all would much prefer to see a big crap between Dave Mc and Dave L!

best typo ever.
I dunno how it's supposed to work but
when I reply to a post (one I didn't start)
I get an email every time anyone else posts.
I'm not sure if this is what is supposed to happen.

Ooops! Didn't spot that!

I think (hope!) people know what I meant!
Otherwise, we could be in for a very unusual dual!

At the very bottom and very top of each thread is a red button labelled "Unsubscribe" or "Subscribe"
(has a little white flag next to it)
Hit the button if it says "Unsubscribe" and it will unsubscribe you from that thread.
Personally, I think it is a bit of a pain to have to do this for every thread I reply to.
IMHO, it sort of penalises regular users to the boards with spam for the benefit of the non-regular users.
Hopefully Darragh and Seanie can get the new software loaded up as soon as it is released.

Damn - I didn't realise it was a typo. What'll I do with four cabbages, a six pack of heinz beans and a large bag of sprouts? Answers on a postcard please...

People wanted a topic notification of some sort in place to notify them of when a topic started, or a reply to a thread was logged, in order to keep pace when not available to log in.
Now you DON'T want that. The old system you all miss was this way. You were automatically subscribed, and you had to de-select that. Then it was changed due to complaints. Then it was changed back. Guys, we're going to go round in circles here.
Until Darragh gets the new release, when it is available, he can't please everybody. I don't think a poll is in order.
Just my two cents worth.

I think the point you are missing is that different people have different requirements.
Some people want it, some people don't.
Saying that "people" wanted it and now "people" don't is missing the point.
In the "ideal" world, this feature would be adjustable by each user.
i.e. if I wanted to get notifications, I would just tick a box in my user profile.
Alternatively, if I didn't want to receive notification, I would untick the box in my user profile.
With the software we have at the mo, it would appear that this feature can only be changed as a global setting for all users by the administrator.
The idea of the poll, if we could even run one, was that the majority would decide what the global setting would be for all users.
Michael.
