Dark(ish) sky site near Dublin? was created by Neil40
Hi all, I hope everyone is well.I was wondering if there are any dark sky places around/close to Dublin. It doesn't have to be super dark. Just better than my back garden. There are spotlights on 24/7 from an ambulance depot 3 metres from my back wall so its pretty bad.
I just want to take a few images so ill have my cpc 1100/camera and laptop and only my skinny little brother to defend me from potential robbers.
I dont drive so he is my lift. I plan to go on Thursday as I am working all weekend. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Neil.

Hi Neil,

If you are on the Southside the Sugarloaf car park is a good spot. Nice horizon and reasonable dark looking South. It can be very windy up there tho'.

if you are willing to travel a bit further, Trooperstown wood car park near Laragh is good. It's darker than the Sugarloaf but with a more restricted horizon. It does have the advantage that it is shielded from the wind.

Regards,

Michael.

Thanks for that Michael. I know this is probably silly but would Viewpoint on the outskirts of Dublin be any darker? I presume not because it literally overlooks the city. I haven't been there in many years so I can only remember the city lights.
Although the Sugarloaf may be the best option. The wind does worry me a little. You would think a heavy scope like a cpc 1100 would not be affected by the wind. But even moderate wind makes the image shake while taking video.

Cheers

Neil

Sorry Micheal I was out. Viewpoint is a small car park where you can look at the whole city of Dublin. All the light that comes from the city. It is only about a 20 minute drive from Drimnagh which is where I am. Its a very pretty view of Dublin but I would think that it may not be the best place to imagoe. Ill probably need to go a bit further out.

Cheers

Neil

Hi Neil,

The biggest issue with setting up at viewpoint is the traffic...headlights from the other cars cause real frustration...that spot Michael mentioned at Trooperstown is a great spot. I think I remember there's another spot at Saint Kevin's Dunganstown, Dunganstown West, Dunganstown, Co. Wicklow.

If you do head out tonight I'm looking forward to seeing your images.

Clear skies,

Darren.
