Irish American no doubt.
If he was Irish we would have said BeJaysus.

Foot long crater?
Maybe he means foot long impact line?

Was it in concrete or in sand or gravel or what?

Difficult to see how a pea-sized meteorite could create a foot-long crater.

Never realized the Great Bombardment was targeted at Cavan ;)

They're not at all convinced over at Bad Astronomy, oddly enough for a story that appeared in the Daily Mail:

There is some discussion about this on the Minor Planet Mailing list. The general consensus is that this whole story is likely untrue or at best exaggerated.

Firstly something travelling fast enough to embed itself in the ground would have blown his hand off it it hit that first. It would be worse than getting shot! Secondly there is no mention of any witnesses. Thirdly they say that the 'meteorite' was identified by astronomers. For all we know these 'astronomers' could have been the boys mate who read sky and telescope once!

All sounds a bit fishy.

One explaination is that a real meteorite landed nearby and the bot was hit by some flying ejecta.

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.
