Michael, I have a 75mW laser and I'm gong to try it tonight.
BUT, would you not have to be continuously pointing the laser at it for it to stay off, as soon as you stop would it not come back on.?
Turning off a few lights isnt going to reduce my light pollution issues, I'm doing this as an experiment, there is no chance of damaging the light.

There is a light detection sensor at the top of the light, it detects if its daytime or nighttime, it turns on the light during low light levels, the trick is to fool the sensor into thinking its daytime. Lasers are intensly bright and can do this, I dont think any damage is possible.

I tried and failed, I could not get the light to go off, trying to aim the laser right on the sensor is difficult.

I think its a simple Light Dependent Resistor - when theres a certain amount of photons falling on the resister, they block the flow of electricity. When they fall below a certain level, electricity is allowed to pass. Very simple device.

If it doesn't work with your own nearby streetlight, they probably have a new version to combat extra-stray light sources i.e. your green laser would have to come down from (almost directly) above.
