I don't know Peter, but I'm also one as we also got hail stones today, reminds me of November.

Yes but if it was November you'd be pretty sure of some cold but at least clear nights :(

Matthew,
I'm sure you have heard of 'Moon Illusion'
Here is an interesting take on why we see it...

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time. . . .

I'd have to side with the idea that because our brains are trained to think
things on the horizon are 'Far Away'.

We usually see the Moon in the sky almost overhead.
Human eyes only naturally focus to a fairly short distance,
(I cant remember exactly but its only a few hundred feet)
therefore, because we do that, our brains 'Think' thats how far away it is.
Even when we know it's not.

Then when we see this same object on the horizon our brains go into
a bit of a melt down and go 'Whoa! this thing is usually only 'so' big,
now that it's on the horizon...it's Waaaay further away...so it must be HUGE'

I know there are loads of theories but thats mine.
I call it the 'Father Ted Theory'
As in..
''No Dougal, these (plastic toy) cows are small...
the cows in the field are far away.......Neeear......Faaar Awaaaaay''.
