Sounds like fairly idiot proof advice that all of us know?

You know Kieran, I have a saying which generally applies to IT systems, 'Just when you think you made it idiot proof, they go and invent a better idiot' I think the same applies here. A lot of people reading this might be a beginner. I certainly never apologise for repeating such warnings when writing about daytime events.

Dave, I think I will have to have that one laminated and put up in our office

My kids always want to use my binos during the day but they are still not old enough to understand that the words 'do not look at the sun' are for their own benefit. I tried 'do not ride the bike around the cars' and have the paint scratches to prove how effective that was :D

Actually a few year ago when I was in southern Canada at Jack Newtons place with John Fitzimons, Dave Bell, John O'Neill and a few others we actually viewed the Double Double in Lyra during the middle of the day, although straining through the eye piece of his 16 inch LX200 I could see only one star from one the doubles while Dave Bell could see both and he was the one who wore glasses... :D

Well, I guess the more experienced folks here know it but you never know who is reading ...

Not even infants in prams look directly at the sun.
Mice,snakes,fish,spiders don't either.

It is a genetically programmed aversion.
As genetically programmed as breathing air.

It is an "aversion" shared by all living things with eyes.
It dates all the way back to the "primordial soup".

The advice is not to let your scope ACCIDENTALLY swing
towards the sun.

I have heard that stars and planets are visible during daylight if using the right equipment and under certain lighting conditions.

Would this only be capable with a certain apeture and using certain filters?
