Bright blue object in the East. was created by pj30something
Early yesterday morning at about 1:30am i was letting the dog out to do her business when i noticed a very bright blue object in the sky towards the east. It was pretty high up in the sky (maybe 70-80 degrees). It was a very vivid light blue with a tinge of white in it at about the 2 o' clock position (with the naked eye). It looks more disk shaped then just a point of light (star)...........

My eyesight is not the best........but pretty good..............but this object really did look more like a planet then a star.

It was also brighter then any surrounding star.

I have not checked with any software yet to see what it might be.............

Im thinking maybe it could have been Regulus (but seemed too bright and disk shaped) or maybe Uranus.

Uranus displays a blue colour,right?

I'd hazard a guess that you were looking at Vega.

You'll be in for a nice surprise if you look south at about 3am Paul and in a little over a months time when you are letting the dog out for a wee at 1am. :D

As for what you saw, I concur with Frank. At that hour and in that part of the sky the only standout bright blue star is Vega. As for it almost looking like a disc? I'd say there might have been a bit of haze over it bloating it or else you had some eye crud or tear distorting your vision a bit.

Uranus wouldn't be visible naked eye really and certainly doesn't show any colour till you point a scope at it from what I have read. Regulus is on the opposite side of the sky setting in the west at that hour.

Yeah i was thinking there was no way Uranus would look like that naked eye.....silly of me even to suggest (but was drinking beer). As for Regulus........(again the drink talking). Of course it's in the west at that time.

So Vega it is (with a bit of cloud cover or something in my eye).

It was just so big and bright.............i even thought about ball lightning.

Vega is very striking, one of the brightest in the summer sky.
We were out at the same time and there was nothing unusual seen by any of us.

I now know it WAS Vega cuz i've seen it plenty of times before very high up and extremely bright. I was just puzzled cuz what i saw appeared disk shaped. Very well could have been shining through mist or i had something in my eye to make it appear that way.

Thanks for clearing this one up for me.

Now you have me guessing. Please tell me we are due a visit from a comet.
