hmmm, I assume proper collimation makes a big difference to the quality of image, right? Will proper collimation allow it to pick up fainter objects than I could last night with the collimation a bit off?
So many questions....

I assume thats what they mean when they use Polaris. When I focus in and out, the top right corner of the star becomes flat. Its definitely not circular anyway. Where do I get a cheshire?

That sounds mores like one of the mirror clips is a bit tight and pinching the optics though doesnt it? Unless the collimation is way off.

It might be no harm to give the folks at greenwitch a call and ask them for some help. I've found them very helpful with after sales support in the poast.

Stephen - yes, with precise collimation you will be able to see fainter objects.

Al - that certainly could be an explanation to a flat edge on a star/object but hopefully its not. Don;t want to put the hex on stephen do we? :)

Assuming its not that, then it will be a poorly aligned secondary WRT to the primary.

Its likely that primaries and secondaries ples everything else gets shifted around during shipping - especially when the UPS man kicks it off the tailgate of the truck...

I think a quick collimation check before contacting Greenwitch would be best - that's probably the advice they'd give anyway.

Cheers

Stephen. If you dont get it sorted I could probably pop out to you on Sat evening and show you how to collimate it pretty accurately. I'm only down the road in Raheny.

Oh and BTW you've got to bring that scope out to a dark sky. You know how you said M51 was just two blobs. Well from a dark sky you *WILL* see spiral arms in M51 with a 12":)

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.

I think Dave McDona is coming out tonight... I just had a peep through it with a film canister with a hole in it.. and nothing looks as it should... .
If Dave is busy, I might take you up on that offer, thanks DaveG.
Spiral arms... really... that would be worth dragging it somewhere. :D
