A Little Help Needed was created by Paul-Byrne
Hi all

This morning I attempted to focus my guide scope, I connected my QHY5II-L mono camera to the 32mm f/4 guide scope and pointed at a tree about 500 metres away.  When connected to SharpCap the live view displayed a blank white field, even when I put my hand over the end of the guide scope, the image did not change.  The camera is recognised by the software but nothing is seen.
This is my first attempt using a guide scope and camera and clearly I am doing something wrong.  I have looked online and found nothing really useful.
I have downloaded PHD2 as well as SharpCap.
What I need is a step-by-step walkthrough, anyone out there who can help.

Yours confused.

Paul

hi Paul,
I would not be an expert and i have only really fiddled around with a zwo camera and firecapture. From trying my camera with sharcap I had the same issue as you. I think the problem is that the gain in the camera controls is set to auto and it goes too high. When testing it i had to drag it all the was nearly to the left for it to display the picture of my room. It does not seem to do this when i use firecapture with the same camera.

Hi Paul,

What sort of PC are you using?  I have a newish Laptop and neither of my QHY devices (Polemaster, QHY5L) work on it.  It is a known issue with some USB controllers. Can you try the camera on another PC if one is available?  A suggestion I did come across was to play a video on the PC while using the camera. I have just tried now and it seemed to help.

Michael.

OK, here's the thing.  The next time someone meets me, hit me really hard on the back of the head.  I was out in Bray and I was thinking about the problem and I asked myself a question, did I actually select the camera?
I came home, connected the camera to the computer, selected the camera in SharpCap, pointed at the bookcase and, "Voila".  A picture appeared.
I feel like the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.
Thanks for the replies, no doubt I will be back when it comes to connecting to PHD2.

I got out this evening to focus the guide scope, thankfully Jupiter was out and gave me the opportunity.  When the moon is next out, I will refine the focus a little more.
I used PHD2 and I really like what it is showing me.
Onwards and upwards.

Hi Paul,

Delighted to read you got it working...and now you just need the clouds to clear off.

Clear skies,

Darren.
