Bright 'star' near the moon was created by Fermidox
Anyone else happen to be observing the moon last night (23rd) and see a 'starlike' object, of Jupiter brightness, close by at around 7.40pm?
I was driving and of course said to myself 'there should be no object of that brightness near (maybe 10 degrees to the SE) of the moon tonight'. I took several glances at it and it appeared to be stationary. When I got to my destination a couple of minutes later... it had disappeared.
If there are no other reports I will have to conclude it was an unlikely reflection of some kind (and yes Jupiter was in the opposite part of the sky) but still, rather strange.

Could it have been a satellite, Finbarr?
I don't think www.heavens-above.com can help you out.
Best regards from Aubrey.

Could be Aubrey. Or a flare of some type. But it wasn't moving and didn't vary in brightness. Filed away in the 'unknown' cabinet

Could it be a glint from a geostationary satellite?

That possibility did cross my mind John. But I've never seen anything of that nature being so bright, and don't recall reports from other observers suggesting that those glints can reach a negative magnitude.
