In terms of the SID monitor, if I already have a radio receiver (ICOM PCR1000), would that do the same job or is a specific instrument needed for this?

tbh Michael Im not really sure. As I say at my talks - Im an astronomer who uses radio not vice versa. You will need some sort of rf amp for that freq, a lot of room for a big aerial and lightening supression circuitry (Ive had to switch off a few times in the last week to be sure).

Just after 1am this morning the Earth's magnetic field titlted south as predicted and with a combination of a fast solar wind blowing at over 450km/sec this helped to spark a very brief magnetic storm, by chance I was able to snap a few images from Charlestown, Co Mayo in bright Moonlight. After taking these photos I drove to a dark site but alas the Magnetic field had tilted back North and the aurora vanished. Possibly the last aurora's before the summer twilight, not unless Sunspot group 1476 can unleash some CME's this week ahead. Ronan Newman
