Although it all sounds a bit farsical there are some reall issues here. Will space be forever the property of governemnts or will private individuals get a piece of this new frontier?

IMHO people should be allowed to own asteroids IF they can back up that cliam by placing a "flag" of some sort on their "property".

I like this one!

So, what about people who claim they own stars? - Does the ownership of a star extend to its planetary system (if any)? How do we know there isn't a lifeform on a planet somewhere with a piece of paper saying they own 'Sol, and all related planets' (including Earth)?

And what about galaxies? - Who owns Andromeda? - Do they own the galaxy including all the stars, planets, property and lifeforms on these planets, gas in the galaxy, and dark matter?

I think I'd better grab one of these remote galaxies first before someone else gets the same idea... Now where's that Hubble deep field pic gone...

it is all right to claim to own something but at some stage you'll come across some present tennants and they might object. it is a typically western approach to things to assume because we are there and no one else is around that we own it. maybe we don't own anything and we are just some of the tennants of this part of space - time. just to keep the debate going.
sean i have laid claim to the local group so be prepared for a fight in court ;).
