Hi Gerry,
Welcome to IFAS! You hardly go to observing sessions with the Celestron in the 'back' of the DeLorean, do you? B)

Don't forget, Midlands Astronomy Club (www.midlandsastronomy.com) is, kind of, not too far away from you, in Tullamore. We have members from Roscommon and Athlone who make the trip to our events every month. It might suit you now and again to come along, who knows. We're hosting a Perseids StarBQ on Saturday night outside of Tullamore , while our next lecture night will be on Tuesday September 1st. You're welcome to come to either, with no obligation to join, and check us out...

MAC Secretary.

Radio Presenter (Midlands 103), Space Enthusiast, Astronomy Outreach Co-ordinator.
Former IFAS Chairperson and Secretary.

Hi guys, always had an interest in astronomy but not the time, getting on a bit now so hopefully getting more time to indulge. I bought a second hand custom made telescope a couple of years ago but the mirrors were poor, well one was broken! Just had the main one redone, wow nor cheap. Now need help in knowing what mirror to get to replace the broken one.

You can find me on Cape Clear Island so not much light pollution here, perfect for star gazing. I look forward to getting started and hopefully posting some pics once I get the hang of things.

Welcome along coolideas, it sounds like you are in a great location ! I sometimes head down south out by the coast to get great views looking southover the sea.

Hi Skyhawk,

Welcome to IFAS. Yes, we do still post here. Thanks for the introduction. Where abouts are you based? To get you started off, it might be a good idea to get involved in one of the local groups/clubs.

Feel free to ask any questions and one of us may be able to help.

Welcome again,

Sean

Greetings all,

I've always had an interest in astronomy but have only recently decided to take the plunge by purchasing my first scope, a Celestron 127 SLT. I've been doing some observing from my back garden (based in Wicklow Town) over the last couple of weeks. Luckily there have been a few clear nights where I've observed the moon and a number of clusters and double stars. Hoping to make it out to somewhere with less light pollution over the next few weeks. Got my first glimpse of a blurry Andromeda last night and I'm hungry to see more :)

Hi Derek and welcome.
There is a get together at the Sugarloaf car park on Friday night at 8.  Why not come along and meet some people.

Hi Derek and welcome to IFAS. Nice scope you have there and I hope you get pleanty of opportunities to get out and use it! I see the Dublin guys have already invited you up to the Sugarloaf - there's some good skies up that way when the weather plays ball and you should be able to get great advice too!

Enjoy the forum and keep us posted as to how you get on!

Clear skies,

Paul.

Thank you lunartic and Paul,

I might not make this Friday due to work commitments but I will keep a close eye on the forums for the next meet up at the sugarloaf and will certainly keep that free

Hi Derek,  you're very welcome to the IFAS. From personal experience, you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer community. Not only are there extremely knowledgeable people who are only delighted to discuss all things astronomical, but their passion for the astronomy is something else. As mentioned already, the meet-up sessions are great way to get to know the some of the members.

Wishing you all the best with your new telescope.

Darren.

Hi everyone my name is Neil. I've always loved astronomy. I had a small scope many moons ago but it barely got used. I saved up and bought a Celestron CPC 1100 a few years ago. (I know nuts for a newbie). The reason I got such a large scope is because having read many posts on this site and the Cloudy Nights forum etc I noticed that people tend to upgrade their equipment a lot. I decided to cut out the middle man! Also my partner gave of permission! I have started using it quite a lot in the last few weeks and intend to continue. I am now trying to pick a dedicated astronomy camera to I can image the planets. I am finding that more difficult then choosing a scope. I am sure the kind people on this site will point me in the right direction.
I hope you are all keeping well during these trying times.
Thanks guys
Neil

Hello Neil,

You're very welcome to the forum. That's some scope you've got yourself. I'm sure you're going to have many years of enjoyment with it. In terms of the astrophotography, I'm of absolutely no help to you as I do visual -sorry! However, there are some very skilled astrophotographers here, so I'm sure someone will offer assistance.

I'm looking forward to seeing your images.

Until then, clear skies,

Darren.

Welcome Neil,

I would say Stephen from Ktec is the man to recommend the correct camera for your needs. I've had some dealings with him and found him very helpful.

I'm not into astrophotography myself in a big way though, just recording some events here and there 'for the record'. Lucky however to have reasonably dark conditions here in S Limerick.

Clear skies,

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the forum. And congrats on cutting out the middle man, that's a fairly beastly scope, for a Newby or vet

Agreed to what everyone else said. Stephen in Ktec is the man. He won't steer you wrong.

Enjoy!!!!

Sean

Thank you Finbarr! I have just sent them a message and asked what camera they would recommend so hopefully I get pointed in the right direction. Thank you for the welcome.

Thanks Finbar,/Sean/Darren for the welcome. I got a pic of Jupiter a few nights ago but will wait until I have something a little bit clearer to post it. Poor old Jupiter looks like a coco pop!
