Eamonn,
I went to Nowen Hill last night, well, not to the top but as close as I could get with my car.
Very dark sky there. Took some milky way snaps. (couldnt attach so posted on twitter

(ok looks like I cant post twitter links either.... Lets try upload again.... )

With 11x70 binoculars I viewed...
M81&82
M51 ( I think I could detect spiral structure!!)
M101
M13
M31
M33
M11 & scutum star cloud

I'd like to go again with a telescope and not on my own. Its pretty creepy there.

It was a long time ago (~15 years) and I remember the sky was very dark. There is a gravel road to the top. Must try here again soon, although nearby towns of Mallow and Charleville have grown in the last 15 years so it may not be as good.

I've been up Seefin a couple of times Derek, but purely for terrestrial sightseeing.

The track must have deteriorated a lot over the last 15 years because I don't think you could take a vehicle up there now, halfway maybe but then the erosion gets too bad.

Stunning location but I'd imagine the seemingly constant gale would make it difficult setting up equipment etc -

Finbarr,

Yes its windy up there :-) I remember that I didnt spend too long up there that night.

Pity about the road. I remember it being a bit rough but it was possible to drive up with no problems.
