Cosmos 2014 - 3 days of Astronomy In Athlone (April 4th-6th)

5 years 9 months ago - 5 years 9 months ago #99883 by manic_dave
Cosmos, Ireland's Biggest Astronomy event returns for its 22nd year.
This time in the new surroundings of the Shamrock Lodge Athlone Co Westmeath.

The decision was taken to move due to Cosmos outgrowing its beloved home in Annaharvey Tullamore.

This year we have more speakers, more stands, bigger prizes and even a few surprises.

In recognition of the tough financial position we all find ourselves in we have also reduced our prices.

Shamrock Lodge is located on the outskirts of Athlone over looking miles of countryside. We have permission to turn the lights down in the car park which will provide ample space for observing. Tea and Coffee will be provided in the car park Friday and Saturday night.

For our more regular attendees we will have a dark site a short distance away with refreshments on site. Details to following in the next week.

Our Friday night program is aimed again at being more family friendly, we will have a talk from Prof Declan Molloy preceded by a Telescope demonstration by Ktech telescopes and a display of Meteorites - Including some from the Chelyabinsk Event last year. With more room than ever before we will have several displays and stations set up with all aspects of Astronomy. Anybody wishing to place a stand at the event please contact PRO Dave Connolly @ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Saturday will be a full program of 4 talks with Lunch, Bottle Rocket Launching and the ever popular Cosmic dinner.
Sunday will have 4 talks and finish slightly earlier to allow people make their way home.

We will publish details with maps and travel distances from all the regions of the Island in the next few days, along with times and line up.

Anyone wishing to stay in the Shamrock Lodge, please mention Cosmos when you call, we have a reduced rate agreed.

Best of luck with this Years COSMOS. It looks like a great line up. I had actually hoped to attend as I will be in Ireland for two weeks around that time but unfortunately have to leave at the end of March to avoid the Easter airfare hikes :-( . With two people travelling it makes a big difference to ones wallet.

There's a few B&Bs, definitely two within about 100 meters of the Shamrock Lodge that would probably be quite a bit cheaper.

Hi Jouke,

We're looking into that for you, it's not the agreed rate so there's obviously a mistake. For anyone that may have (or will think they will) experience the same, please hold off for a day or so till one of us from MAC reports back here.

What will Declan be talking about? When will you have the other talk titles?

Could you send me 30 of the promo leaflets for our next meeting at which we will try to organize a group to go to Cosmos

Thanks

Hi Roy,

No need for pre-purchasing tickets. We were going to facilitate an online prepay system (we still might), but a technical difficulty with PayPal has delayed that (not that this prepayment was crucial for anything).

Rest assured, this is NOT a ticket event, and there will be plenty of room on the weekend!

Air-powered Rocket Launches

This year, MAC member (and Engineer) Bob Campbell has constructed a pressurised air platform to act as a launch pad for up to 4 rockets! Building your rocket is easy: you just need an empty pop bottle (the 1.5 litre to 2.5 litre kind) and get creative! The bottle neck is the 'exhaust', so your rocket has to be built upside-down so to speak. This event will take place during the lunch break on Saturday afternoon from around 1:45pm and is open to all visitors to COSMOS, young and old.

Good luck!

€5 Friday only.

Children under 12 are gladly welcomed free with an accompanying, paying adult.

Hi folks. It appears the weather will NOT be good for our Cosmos weekend except possibly for solar observing in the daytime.

Ir was great to see 6 sunspots in the white light filter as Valerie and I were leaving, and 2 glorious prominences in the H-alpha filter. All the lectures were delivered with great passion. My personal favourite was John McKeown on Saturday morning -he was great at waking me up!! Perhaps I shall get to use my scope at next year's Cosmos. It was great to meet both John and William Bean for the 1st time.

What a weekend! One of our best crowds ever, great speakers, visitors, exhibitors... the whole experience really. Sadly, there was no observing Friday or Saturday night. It's the first time in 9 years that there was no night time observing at Cosmos. Still, we had various views of the Sun on Friday and Sunday, so we still got some 'hard core' astronomy done. ;)

Thanks to everyone who helped and attended the event, a winner for sure. :grouphug:
