Hi Keith,
while you're waiting for the sky to clear, why not start counting the stars in the image

Have you figured down to what star magnitude the image goes?

Hi John, Thanks for that tip in the 70-200mm lens, I've also been looking at a 24-70 F2.8 lens made by sigma for about £250 sterling, i believe thats quite good also. I do always shoot in RAW mode anyway, just to get the most out of the shot, how do you set the white balance later on? - in photoshop?

Dave, as for the amount of stars, let's see how many you count first!
I'd say this image shows stars down to about 9th magnitude, which is not bad for 2mins exposure!

Keith,

Be careful with the Sigma lenses if you plan to use one or more of them with a digital camera. The reason I say this is that some of their lenses require a chip upgrade and the chips have been exhausted due to many returns and consequent upgrades.

If possible, take your digital camera with you when about to make a purchase and test the lens on site. If your camera displays ERR 999 (EOS 300d) or "bc" (battery check for your regular 35mm EOS, ex EOS 3), the lens is NOT useable.

The trick of stopping down at least one f/stop on these problematic lenses may or may not work.

Anthony, A friend loaned me a sigma 75-300 zoom lens which he bought for a standard film based eos. About 3 out of 5 times I get that err 99 message. The camera has to be turned off and on again to clear it.

Regards and Clear Skies,

Thats a realy pity because Sigma lenses seem to be great value for money compared to the "own brand" lenses for cameras. I have a 70-300 sigma lens for my minolta (non digital) SLR and it performs superbly at all settings even when using slide film which usually can catch optical issues better than print film. I have the APO version.
