Hi
The diagram below is a mock up (not to scale obv) of Jupiter and 4 moons - seen on the 24/11/10 at about 7pm from Kerry.

Can anyone give me any pointers on identifying them correctly- both tonight and in the future?

Regards

Nick

Hi Nick,

There are several online tools that allow you to see the positions of Jupiter's moons at any date and time that you specify. Links to two such sites are below:

www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/object...ascript/3307071.html
www.shallowsky.com/jupiter.html

Alternatively, download the free planetarium programme "Stellarium". It has really nice graphics and will allow you to zoom in on Jupiter, and many other astronomical objects, so see the positions of its moons. Again you can change the time if you wish. Download it (PC, Mac & Linux versions) from:

www.stellarium.org/
