One of the things I found interesting though was that most of the sound bites I've read about NLCs indicate that they are hard to spot and that averted vision and or long exposure shots are needed to see them. I have not found this to be the case. I know what I'm seeing are definitely NLCs, its too dark to see the normal cloud, and the shape/pattern and luminesence all looks correct. I reckon a lot is as you say down to the ideal NLC weather we've been having.
I've found them easy to spot with the naked eye in twilight. The main reason for not seeing them is not looking! So txt messages are very much appreciated (thank folks!).
The public in general does not look up. I remember being near Dolymount for the auroras of 2003, and people just walking along oblivious to a major aurora taking place overhead!
