It is an atmospheric phenomenon.
(As well as a million other things.)
Mark.
Anybody who says that Earthshine is reflected Sunshine is talking Moonshine.

As Peter said, it is a classic sunset atmospheric phenomena.
Look closely and you'll see what is occasionally called the countersun. More details at www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/mirtemp.htm

I think so Dave. The trick here is not to claim what you CAN see, but what you DON't see. Correct me if I'm wrong Paul, but if you notice how the Sun is 'attached' to the horizon? In actual fact, half of the sun is physically below the horizon at this stage of sunset. We see the diffracted attachment of light between virtual and real Suns.
Well?

Yes Seanie, John's (skynotes) link explains it best, but it's the reflection of the Sun comng up to meet the real Sun that is the feature - caused by different temperatures of water and air. The best version of it can look like a vase which is called an Etruscan Sun - I'd appreciate Anthony's view as he mentioned it the other day as to whether this one is an Etruscan or not?
A bit more than just another sunset I think!

Good one, John and I posted at essentially the same time, so I missed his post milliseconds before mine.
