2021 Perseids was created by Paul-Byrne

Hi all

While talking to John Flannery the other night, we got into the subject of the Perseids and where would be a good observing site, John suggested the Shay Elliot memorial on the road to Glenmalue.  He told me there is a big car park and great views.

The moon is a waxing crescent and will set early.  Is anyone up for a trip on the night?  It is a Wednesday night.

How about we meet in Laragh village around 8.30?  There is a small shop called Celtic Crafts in the village, next to the pub with a car park, we can meet there before moving on.

Hello everyone.

Does that road to Laragh have a number?
(I just need reminding).
Which direction do a need to find coming from Ranelagh.
Can I take it the N11 is no use?
Maybe coming from Stepaside would be better.

It's still a great idea to meet up at 8.30 pm on the Wednesday evening.
I hope to bring both Valerie and the scope.

Very best regards from Aubrey.

Hi Aubrey,

The road is the R755. It's the road that you take to the Sugarloaf but keep going to Roundwood rather than turn to the Sugarloaf.

Once in Roundwood, keep going on the R755 and you will end up in Laragh.

Michael.

If the Wednesday weather is too bad, we can try for the Thursday.

My monthly guide information for this year's Perseids was taken from the IMO Meteor Site and they have the peak night Thu/Fri 12th/13th - 20:00 to 23:00 Summer Time peak window.

Cheers for that post Paul about meeting for the Perseids.

A spot I've used before is accessible by travelling from Hollywood on the R756 (Wicklow Gap Road) towards Turlough Hill. You then turn down the L8353 and about 1 km from there is a large open area. There is a forestry barrier but the site has an impressive horizon and the road little travelled.

Antonio Martin-Carillo and I went to Turlough Hill last year for the Perseid maximum and the two of us used the Shay Elliott Memorial Car Park a couple of times when Neowise was around. There is one main car park at the Shay Elliott site but also a wide open space across the road. The plateau there certainly helps and it is a pretty dark location.
