Computer power problem

Just a possibility, but have you checked the 110/220 voltage selector switch on your PCs power supply? It may have been nudged over to 110v from the correct 220v setting.

I checked that, but it's OK, it can't be accidently nudged as it is securely sealed over.

Right I had a couple of PSU's in the loft but I've finally checked them and I don't think either will do for you. This happened me a few years ago and in the end I just brought the psu in to a computer store and they gave me a replacement. About £40 or so.


Of course it might not be the problem....... :

Thanks for trying anyway. I found a computer repair guy who says he will check it out for me and give an estimate. His opinion is it could be the PSU but he reckons that HP PSU's very seldom go if they aren't subjected to heavy loads, and mine hasn't had any additions to it since being bought. He reckons if the PSU does need replacing he can supply and fit for €60, but we need to wait and see what the tests produce.

your power supply probably isn't a HP one at all!!
Don't make the connecion between Packard-Bell and Hewlett-Packard - they are 2 different companies in both technology and innovation! Your Packard Bell computer is mostly made up of generic parts. Probably made the same for Dell, Compaq, and Gateway (when they were alive). HP make their own components for themselves and nobody else - another manufacturer makes them for Dell, PB, Compaq etc.

Still, the basics of power supply units are the same - a HP power supply unit with the same wattage will do the exact same as your current PB one!

Jeeze, you're right! I beg your pardon Bill, I don't know why, but when I read it first a few days ago, its been stuck in my head as a Packard-Bell!
