Having slagged Dave Lillis about this phenomenon, I was both surprised and embarassed to experience same on a nignts observing with Michael O'Connell.

I looked at many possibilities and concluded that it was "Heat Lightning"

Do you have any resources on Heat Lightning becaseu it's something I've never heard of before.

Defintiely not heat lightning so .... like I siad I have seen these flashes on nights when the entire country was clear and there was not a storm anywhere.

Just to add myself to this list... :D

Used to see plenty of blue flashes when I was living in Dublin- just dismissed them as lightning or some other kind of electrical storm. Very bright and very quick. No particular direction- seemed to cover the entire sky. I didnt think there was anything unusual about it at the time but then again I dont think there's anything unusual about Tayto and chicken sandwiches...
