I store my images by year first, then by month and finally by day: eg
Astrophotos (name of folder)
-2002 (seperate folders)
-2003
-2004
then, under each year I have 12 seperate folders:
-2004 01 January
-2004 02 February
and then finally, by date (not one for every day, just one folder for each day I took images):
-2004 01 12
-2004 01 13
etc
Using this date format ensures that they are always lined up in the explorer window in date format.
I store them on my second hard drive (ie. not the one windows is on in case you need to to a reinstallation of windows and need to format the c: drive)

Clear skies,

Michael,
I used to do what you do there, but I changed our to creating a directory for each photography night, if you follow the directory naming convention where you start off with the year, then month and day date such as
2004_11nov_06, it will always align up correctly. this way you can see your dates for the entire year and before at a glance.

finnjim2001,
I have zonealarm, and its a great firewall, but it doesnt have a built in virus scanner, at least the verison I have doesnt ?? but it tells me if nortons has expired or fallen out of date.

Does anyone use the FITS format for astrophotos now that its freely available? I think I posted the link a while back.

For quickly looking at images, I use Irfanview. It's free and v. quick to load.

Right lossless compression 101!

Yes, after a power nap I realised how it could be done. Long time since I passed my Pooting BSc. Forgotten most of it.
