John,

Some numbers being circulated mention a $10,000 USD cost for this excursion to Easter Island ... and all of this for a location with a 40% predicted success rate due to the weather.

If these numbers do hold, I am certainly out of this one since I would rather spend that kind of money on serious equipment (ex. another AP1200GTO mount).

Part of the problem is that the Chilean airline "LAN" has an exclusive route between mainland Chile and Easter Island and pricing is already around $2500 for this segment alone.

Similar gouging is happening with the accommodations on the island.

Anthony.

Great stuff John. I went with Dan Oppliger to China last year. I already know quite a few people on the trip!

Dave, have a look here: tropicalsails.com/2010-Solar-Eclipse-Cruise.pdf

I'm in the cheapest section which is around US$2365. I'm not sure if they've sold out or not. My girlfriend, Mary, put down a deposit but won't necessarily go because her phd is due around that time. I'll be sure to advertise here if there's a spare place!

I had a good look at that brochure and the maps in it.
Make sure you keep well clear of Disappointment Islands! :-)
